AMS2750: The Standard for Heat Treatment in Aerospace
Precise control, data traceability, and compliance for critical processes in the aerospace industry
Heat treatment as a critical process
The heat treatment of metals is a critical process where product quality is not always verifiable directly afterwards. For this reason, rigorous control of process conditions is necessary, with particular attention to:
- Temperature measurement accuracy
- Thermal uniformity of the furnace
- Instrumentation reliability
- Completeness and traceability of records
In this context, the AMS2750 standard defines the pyrometric requirements for heat treatment equipment used in the aeronautical and aerospace sectors.
Compliance with this standard is essential to ensure process quality, repeatability of results, and full regulatory compliance.
What is the scope of the AMS2750 standard
The objective is to ensure that materials and components are treated in accordance with applicable specifications, certifying that the entire production chain ensures accuracy and traceability in heat treatment
In particular, the AMS2750 standard covers requirements related to:
- Temperature sensors
- Control, monitoring, and recording instruments
- Heat treatment equipment
- System Accuracy Test (SAT)
- Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS)
Instrumentation and Electronic Recording Accuracy Requirements
AMS2750 for instrumentation defines the requirements for control, monitoring, and recording devices used to convert the signal from sensors installed in the furnace into temperature. It also describes the required technical characteristics and the rules for testing, calibration, and data traceability.
Specifically, the AMS2750H version defines the following requirements for control and recording equipment: >±2.0 °F or ±1.1 °C or 0.2% of the measured value, whichever is greater.
Ex.
| Measured temperature |
Accuracy 0.2% of measured value | AMS2750 accuracy requirement | Rule to apply |
| 399°C (750°F) | 0.79°C (1.5°F) | ±1,1°C (±2°F) | ±1,1°C (±2.0°F) values below a 537°C (999°F) |
| 537°C (999°F) | 1.07°C (2.0°F) | ±1,1°C (±2°F) | |
| 676°C (1250°F) | 1.36°C (2.5°F) | ±1,36°C (±2.5°F) | 0.2% of the reading |
| 815°C (1499°F) | 1.63°C (3.0°F) | ±1,63°C (±3.0°F) |
System Accuracy Test (SAT) and Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS)
Verifying the accuracy of the measurement system and the temperature uniformity of the furnace is a central element of the AMS2750 standard. SAT and TUS tests ensure process stability over time and full compliance with regulatory requirements.
The System Accuracy Test (SAT) verifies the entire measurement chain—sensor, wiring, and instrument—directly in the field, comparing it to a reference thermocouple, while the Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS) verifies temperature uniformity in the various zones of the furnace, within the qualified operating range and in relation to the assigned furnace class.
Data Traceability
Data traceability is a central requirement of the AMS2750 standard and allows for the demonstration over time of the correct execution of heat treatment processes. In this context, electronic records store and manage process information in digital format, ensuring integrity, security, and controlled access to data. The system must prevent untraceable modifications, allow only the viewing of original data, and enable the generation of complete and verifiable copies to support inspections and audits.
